Interest of micro-reactors for the implementation of advanced electrocatalytic oxidation with boron-doped diamond anode for wastewater treatment

Boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode has attracted great attention in the last two decades for its surpassing performance advanced electro-oxidation treatment of wastewater and disinfection. Due to heterogeneous-like oxidation organic pollutants, more suitable electrochemical reactor designs have been recently proposed optimal degradation mineralization with BDD anode. Microfluidic reactors emerged as a promising alternative by implementing submillimetric interelectrode gaps flow-by or flow-through parallel-plate systems. Micro-reactors allow intensifying mass transport species toward electrode while reducing energy consumption avoiding addition supporting electrolytes. The principle main influencing operating parameters discussed this review. Perspectives reactive electro-mixing could permit combination micro-reactors macro-reactors increasing capacity limiting clogging effect. Further researches are required overcome drawbacks benefit from electro-precipitation phenomena recovery value-added compounds.
